Supporting Grieving Workers
Workers will bring their grief to work after they’ve lost someone or something they’re attached to. The loss of a loved one, major life passages, illness or divorce is the obvious types of loss for an agency to recognize and respond to. When grief events occur, workers recognize that they are expected to continue to work productively and to find ways to accommodate the impact of loss. But grief is a unique and confounding experience for everyone and can show up in a variety of ways:
Cognitively: worker fatigue, inability to focus…
Physically: increased illness, reduced productivity, changes in capacity/tolerance…
Emotionally: brittle, fragile or angry workers…
Relationally: inter-personal, team and supervisory conflict…
Socially/Spiritually: loss of hope, lack of enthusiasm…
The goal is to effectively support grieving workers and create a positive atmosphere for both bereaved workers coming back to the office, and for the rest of the team. 1-1 coaching and training on the basics of grief and loss for the entire team can be helpful.
