Grief – our own and others - makes us uncomfortable, and the workplace may feel like a hard place to navigate it. We are anxious for a rapid return to full functioning of grieving co-workers, or alternately, we see medical treatment as a cure for those struggling to cope with grief. At times it may seem easier to just ignore what’s happening and hope it gets better over time. But it’s a myth that time heals all wounds.
A functioning team needs to be able to communicate well and support one another in order to provide the best possible service. It may be a juggling act to reconcile the needs of workers with employers’ needs for performance and productivity. However, we believe that with knowledge and practical tips, you will have a solid foundation for developing workable strategies that suit both the needs of your staff and volunteers, as well as the culture and effectiveness of your organization.
The goal is to help workers process their diverse loss responses in a way that enhances self and collective care and creates support and stability within the team. Educational sessions and the creation of practices such as group memorials/rituals can help a team collectively acknowledge, then work with, these types of losses. This fosters individual and team resilience.
